A very important aspect of the Support Group is to provide social opportunities for those with Down’s syndrome and their families. We do this by providing numerous activities and events throughout the year for the whole family.
Activities have included trips to Gulliver’s, Kids World Indoor Play Area, the Circus, pantos, Family BBQ and sledging.
We also provide an outing for each week of the Summer holidays and these have included trips to Southend-on-Sea, Wicksteed Park, Mead Open Farm, Pirate Golf, Thames Valley Adventure Playground, Paradise Wildlife Park, pony riding and the theatre.
Every year we have a fantastic Christmas Party and in March, a Get Together to celebrate World Down’s Syndrome Day.
We also have an annual activity weekend at PGL. Families have the opportunity to participate in various activities such as canoeing, Aeroball, archery, challenge course, climbing, sensory trail, giant swing and zip wire! This weekend not only gives our children and youngsters the chance to try activities they may not otherwise be able to access, but it provides the wonderful opportunity for families to enjoy activities together and to socialise with many other families in a safe, relaxed environment for a fantastic family weekend away!
The Support Group has been able to fund the person with Down’s syndrome for all these activities and often also paid for a carer, sometimes even places for the whole family.
All these activities give our members the chance to have fun together as a family throughout the year, meet other families and make important friendships for the children with Down’s syndrome, their parents and siblings.
